My work is influenced by the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, and tao & zen philosophy. The ongoing theme of my work is the recognition of natural forces, shapes, gestures, and especially, time. When I choose my subjects to work with, I feel a sense of belonging to the innate forms…these natural shapes - some ravaged by time - I know as my own destiny. It is satisfying for me to attempt to identify the most basic truths that are common denominators of life’s dynamic both in humans and in the rest of the natural world.
Early in 2001 I began printing some of my new creative work using pigment ink on fine art papers. For years I had wanted to print my images on deckle edge watercolor and printing papers. The tactile quality of the paper lured me. The uneven edge was more ‘organic’, more real to the feeling I wanted to convey in my work, instead of the razor cut squared edges of photographic paper. All prints are matted and mounted with white archival matboard.
