Since he was sixteen, Joseph Holmes has traveled to wild places to find the natural beauty that his work is all about. California, Utah, Arizona, Alaska, Hawaii, and New England are some of his favorite locations. He is a California native and holds a degree in the Conservation of Natural Resources from UC Berkeley, and is a self-described omnologist (one who studies everything). His prints are widely collected and he has exhibited throughout the United States. He has published three books, including two of the most respected books of landscape photography: Joseph Holmes - Natural Light, The Nature Company, 1989, and Canyons of the Colorado, Chronicle Books, 1996.
Joseph uses a four-by-five inch camera system and a variety of color films to capture the subject matter. After film processing, he scans the film on a very high quality film scanner, and uses a large number of extremely complex imaging processes to realize the image in electronic form. All of the photographs shown on this site are available as original prints made to order by the artist with the greatest care and finest techniques, from four-by-five inch color film. They are made on Epson Premium Luster (250) paper, with an EPSON 9800 wide-format printer, and are archivally mounted and matted.
