Beverly Brown’s dreamlike images are inspired by the emotional qualities of light and small moments in her day-to-day life:an empty bench at dusk; shadows of bare trees on a city sidewalk; a sailboat fading into the horizon. While her work is representational, it often verges on pure abstraction, expressing feeling rather than appearance. In each work of art, Ms. Brown captures a fleeting sensation, a burst of energy, a poetic moment discovered in the everyday world.
Her photography has employed 19th century processes such as hand-tinting, toning and hand-applied emulsion - often resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces. For many years she has worked with a toy “Diana” camera which gives her images a fuzzy quality.More recently she has embraced digital photography.
